Don't Worry Be Happy by Shalene

Most of you probably remember the song by Bobby McFerrin- "Dont' Worry Be Happy" from the late 80's (am I showing my age here?) And in it, he doesn't give us any Scriptural basis for this, per se. But did you know that there is a Scriptural basis for these words?

I was recently ministering to a friend of mine who was worried about some health issues she is having and I asked her if she would like me to share some scriptures with her that she could meditate on, while she was awaiting the results of some tests she had done. This is what I shared with her.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God Philippians 4:6 NKJV

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body.......... Matthew 6:25 NKJV

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day [is] its own trouble. Matthew 6:34 NKJV

Does worry bog you down? Do you become anxious, allowing the deceiver to speak lies into your life? Do you forget that God has a divine plan for you, and that nothing outside of His plan will come to pass? Do you forget that God gives us strength to overcome any trial or tribulation that He does allow into our lives?
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:2-6 NKJV

So what do you do with the worries and cares of the day? I am aware that it's not easy to just not worry. It's so much easier said than done. Therefore, I submit these additional verses for you to meditate on.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God Psalm 42:5 NKJV

--Lord, today I pray for the worries of the world. That I might be free of my worries, though they are blessedly few. I pray for the readers of these words, that they might know the freedom from worry that You alone can give. Blessed is he that trusts in You. I pray these things in Jesus' Holy Name. Amen.

  1. Great post Shalene!

I noticed how you mention meditation several times in this message. I learned that when we mediate, we use the same part of our brain that we use to worry.

Meditation is a great way to keep God's word in the forefront of ours thoughts, making his Word dominant over all other imaginations.

I believe meditation is a part of the Christian walk that many overlook. This may be a great topic to post on.

Some people believe that meditation means sitting Indian style while saying "ummmmmmmm" over and over and over again for hours on end.

Anyway, I gotta run for now. I enjoyed your post today. Very Powerful! Thank You!

    Joshua 1:8
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

  3. Sometimes the whole attitude of "Let Go and Let God" is a hard one to master. It requires much faith to let your worries go and just know that they are part of God's plan. I usually end up worrying about what God is thinking and if He remembers that I am in the middle of this "crisis."
However, I usually end up thinking, "Ohhh...that's why I lost my keys for 15 mintues (there was an accident I would have been invloved in, if I wouldn't have been running late.)

  4. Great post babe. Thanks for the reminder.

Readers, I suffered from anxiety attacks for some time, to the point of needing Zoloft. In the middle of an "attack" my wife would always ask me if I took it, whatever it was making me anxious, to God. I kind of did. I say kind of because I would pray about it, then turn right around and worry about it again. I wasn't fully trusting Him, trusting that He is in control not me.

    Not trusting in Him COMPLETELY.

I do that now, trust in Him completely. I still have worries, how can you not with the size of family that I have depending on me, but I don't let "life things" consume me.

It's funny that my wife posted this today because I just had someone from BSF approach me and ask what it was that makes me so happy all the time. (I was going to tell him it's because I have the most awesome, wonderful, beautiful wife but I didn't). I simply told him what my wife has told me so many times, give it to Him with complete trust. Complete trust that He has "got your back". It is hard for us men to do that. Most men have a hard time aknowledging that we are not in control. It took me some time to do it but I did it.

All my love to you babe!!!!

shalene, thank you for showing me the scriptures and for your advice to write them on my mirror. Seeing The words , especially the "red words" in front of my eyes has been a powerfull healing in more ways then one. In some way it has helped me to give my worries to God. I find that as my trust in Him grows so does my faith. And that fills me with such a sense of peace. As always, Thank you.
