Confessions of a Cheater

Hello again, Dear Reader! I am so happy to be back here today, to tell you that I am going to be cheating! That's right, I'm going to "cheat" and I'm perfectly happy about it. Ok, I'm not really cheating per se, but I am doing things a little differently.

I wrote to you the other day that I would be homeschooling my children, and that was the reason that I would not be able to post for awhile. Well, the homeschooling will not start until the third week in January. So, I have some time to continue to post, at least some of the time. Unfortunately though, I am sick again. (Perhaps, I just wasn't fully recovered from my last sickness, but I'm doing alright- I have bronchitis.)

So how am I cheating you ask? Well it turns out that the idea of finding a curriculum for my children all by myself that wouldn't cost anything, and still adhered to the standards required by California, was extremely daunting for me, to say the least. So we have decided to enroll our oldest first in a program called CAVA. CAVA stands for California Virtual Academy. It is actually a public school, that the student does entirely from home, by way of the internet. I have to supply any Christian based learning that they get, because it IS a public school, but that's ok. I do that already. The good things about this program are that it's entirely free, and they even supply the computer and programs necessary to fulfill the requirements of the curriculum. They also supply all the textbooks. Also, they reimburse most of the cost of an Internet Service Provider.

Obviously, I don't know yet, how well this will work for our family, but I'm thinking that it's probably the best choice for us. I know it's not the traditional way that one homeschools, but go ahead, call me a cheater if you want. :) Anyway, just wanted to update everyone. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, it is in 18 other states as well. The company that supplies the curriculum is called k12.com and you can find more information about one in your state that way.

Blessings to you, and I will continue to post as I can, until the third week in January. Then I will be giving up blogging until I've learned the ropes, so to speak. We will be adding my son and then my five year old, as we learn more about what is required as far as time and resources go. Please stop back by soon, and perhaps I'll ahve something interesting for you to read.

There is no "MORE" to this post.

  1. Glad you found something that you think will work for you.

I enjoy your blog. Do you think you'll be able to post on weekends?

  2. Hi Terrie, I will post as often as I can, weekdays or weekends. I tend not to post on Sundays, only because that is the day we observe a Sabbath, and the day that we spend together as a family, but I will be posting whenever I can. I do hope you'll stop back by often. I enjoy doing this so much, that I envision myself finding the opportunities to continue to do so, so long as it doesn't hurt my children or my family. Blessings to you. Now I'm off to visit your blog. :)

  4. Ooh, I like these 'cheating' episodes, lol, coz I get to see posts on your blog.

I've just read that some Singapore math textbooks have been adopted by the State of California for inclusion into their curriculum.

If you ever need help on any of those, my wife teaches math here in Singapore as a private teacher, so just drop us a note at my email. :)

    Hope you get better soon!

    Blessings, and Shalom Aleichem!

  5. Good luck to you. I will miss reading your blog, but will continue to check in just in case. I have an idea - you can add blogging to your curriculum and have your kids post for you.

  6. Michelle, I will let you know how it goes. I don't think that there is a specific program for your state, but I know there is an international program that you could probably do. If you've been looking into it already, you probably know about that. (I won't give away the state you live in, in case others don't already know.) Blessings to you, my friend.

Isaiah, I'm not cheating yet. I won't be cheating until the third week in January. And then I'll be cheating by the manner that we've chosen to homeschool. Not the blog posts, silly. I will have to "give up" blogging at least for a little while when it actually starts, because I will have to oversee my daughter's progress, and just won't have time to do both. Blessings to you, my other friend!

Heather, do continue to stop by. I'm not stopping yet. It'll be about a month and a half before I stop. Blessings to you as well!

  7. Gah, silly me! :( I'll remind myself to have a cup of coffee before I comment on any blog posts from now on.

  8. By the way, Shalene, have you read this article?

I just did, and to say that I am disgusted is putting it mildly.

  9. Anything is better than public school so I'm sure you're doing the right thing! My sister was homeschooled up until 11th grade. She went to public school her senior year but everything was fine. It was hard work for my mom but she was happy to do it.

May the Lord bless your efforts!

  10. I have a friend that uses the K12 program and recommended it to me when I start homeschooling my daugther in 2 years.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!
